PU Leather (Faux Leather) vs Genuine Leather: What Happens Over Time?

At first, the difference can be hard to see.

PU leather can look smooth, uniform and convincing when new. Genuine leather can sit beside it and not look dramatically different in a product photo.

Time changes that.

AFTER APPROXIMATELY ONE YEAR

ONE CAN PEEL.
THE OTHER DEVELOPS CHARACTER.

The photographs show a faux-leather surface after approximately one year of use. The coating has started to crack, lift and peel away.

That difference matters when you are buying something you want to carry for years.

CRACKING

The synthetic surface fractures as its coating deteriorates.

PEELING

THE SHORT ANSWER

PU LEATHER VS GENUINE LEATHER

PU leather is a synthetic leather-like material, typically made with a polyurethane surface over a textile base.

Genuine leather is made from animal hide.

Both can look good when new. The real difference appears in how they change with use, after time.

PU leather can crack or peel when its surface coating deteriorates. Real leather can scratch, crease and change colour, but those changes can become part of the material’s patina rather than exposing a fabric underneath.

01 / WHY PU LEATHER CAN PEEL

THE LEATHER LOOK COMES FROM A SURFACE LAYER.

PU leather relies on a synthetic coating to create its texture and appearance.

Over time, repeated flexing, friction, heat, moisture and general wear can weaken that surface. This can happen in less than a year, although quality and use vary.

When the outer layer begins to fail, the change is structural rather than simply cosmetic.

The photographs show one example after roughly one year. They do not mean every PU product lasts one year, but they show the type of failure that can happen when the outer coating breaks down.

02 / REAL LEATHER AGES DIFFERENTLY

A MARK IS NOT THE SAME AS A PEEL.

Real leather is not supposed to stay perfectly untouched.

It can scratch. It can crease. It can darken where it is handled.

For good leather, those changes can become part of the object rather than evidence that a coating is separating. That is patina.

GOOD LEATHER DOESN’T NEED TO LOOK NEW FOREVER. IT SHOULD LOOK BETTER LIVED IN.

03 / WHY COFFT USES CRAZY HORSE LEATHER

MADE TO CHANGE.

Crazy Horse leather is not horse leather.

It is real leather, typically cowhide, with a waxed pull-up finish. When the leather bends or is handled, the finish shifts slightly. That creates tonal variation, marks and depth.

The surface evolves instead of remaining perfectly uniform. That is exactly why we chose it.

04 / PEELING VS PATINA

BREAKDOWN IS NOT AGEING.

Fabric may become exposedLeather remains the material underneath
Damage often looks like failureVariation becomes part of the character

PEELING IS BREAKDOWN. PATINA IS EVOLUTION.

05 / IS REAL LEATHER ALWAYS BETTER?

NOT FOR EVERY USE.

PU leather can make sense if you prioritise lower cost, uniform colour, animal-free materials or a particular synthetic finish.

Technical fabrics can also be better when minimum weight or weather resistance matters most.

But if you want a bag you plan to use repeatedly for years, ask a different question:

HOW WILL THIS MATERIAL LOOK AFTER I’VE LIVED WITH IT?

06 / WHAT TO CHECK BEFORE BUYING

LOOK PAST “PREMIUM LEATHER.”

01WHAT IS THE MATERIAL ACTUALLY MADE FROM?

02IS THE SURFACE A SYNTHETIC COATING?

03HOW IS IT SUPPOSED TO AGE?

04WILL MARKS BECOME PATINA—OR CAN THE SURFACE PEEL AWAY?

05DOES THE BRAND CLEARLY EXPLAIN WHAT IT USES?

The word “premium” tells you very little. The material specification tells you much more.

QUICK ANSWERS

MATERIALS, CLEARLY.

IS PU LEATHER REAL LEATHER?

No. PU leather is generally a synthetic leather-like material made using polyurethane over a textile base.

DOES PU LEATHER PEEL?

It can. If the synthetic coating deteriorates, the surface may crack, flake or separate from the backing.

IS FAUX LEATHER THE SAME AS PU LEATHER?

PU leather is one common type of faux leather. “Faux leather” is a broader category that can include other synthetic constructions.

IS CRAZY HORSE LEATHER REAL LEATHER?

Yes. Crazy Horse leather is real leather, typically cowhide, treated with a waxed pull-up finish. It is not horse leather.

DOES CRAZY HORSE LEATHER SCRATCH?

Yes. Marks and tonal variation are characteristic of the material and contribute to its patina over time.
